Photo Drivers License- You must get a PA driver's license within 60 days of moving to this state. A 3-part driver's exam, consisting of driving knowledge, vision and a road test may be taken at any one of the Pennsylvania Department of transportation (PennDot) Driver's License Centers. The road test portion may be waived by the examiner if you hold a valid driver's license from another state. Driver's manuals are available at the testing centers. You must provide proof of name and date of birth (so take your old license along). If you do not have a license then take along your birth certificate and Social Security Card when you go to apply. License is valid for 4 years.

Registration and Title- To operate a vehicle in this state you must have a PA title, registration card and plate. You must present a valid title from the state you left, issued in your name or properly assigned to you. if the vehicle was not required to be titled by that state, the current registration certificate for the vehicle must be presented. Tags may be attained at auto clubs, notary publics, auto dealers or the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Sales Tax- If you hold a valid title issued in another state and if you owned the vehicle for at least six months before moving to PA, there is no sales tax assessed when you register your vehicle in PA. if the vehicle was purchased less than six months ago, you must pay a tax based on the difference between PA's Tax (6% of the purchase price less any trade-in) and any sales tax you paid in your prior state, unless the other state's tax was greater.

Insurance- all motor vehicles registered in PA must be covered by financial responsibility. this must consist of a standard motor vehicle liability insurance policy from an insurance company or a self insurance program approved by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Minimum required coverage is Bodily Injury Liability of $15,000/person $30,000/accident with $5000 of Property Damage Liability and $5000 of First Party Medical Benefits.

(Your car must be inspected once each year and you must provide proof of insurance at inspection by presenting your valid insurance ID card. Cards may not be issued for more than 6 months at a time)
